bENCOURAGEd to: Remember that... "Little Bites Make You Feel Good!"

Tuesday's Tip to bENCOURAGEd...

Her mouth opened wide as she raised her heaping spoonful of mashed potatoes to her lips. She glanced my way, but before I could pull her hand down it was too late - pudgy cheeks surrounded a “too large” portion. The chewing had begun followed by a strenuous swallow and wincing eyes. Then it happened - as her swollen checks shrunk back to size - she grabbed her spoon and proceeded to do it all over again. That is when I uttered six words that would stay with me forever.

“Little Bites Make You Feel Good!”

For months and years these words would train our children how to eat their portions of food. But beyond their plates, these words can teach us all how to be productive and fulfilled.

Whether it is a meal or a project - most of us try to bite off more than we can chew. But if we remember that “Little Bites Make You Feel Good!” we can enjoy our productivity as we take it "one bite" at a time.

But HOW?

This week let’s apply this phrase to our homes:

Recently, I read a Facebook post from my friend who said...

“I guess I started cleaning the kitchen at one point then decided halfway through to clean the mud room, then in the middle of that I decided it was a good time to paint? Anyone else clean like this? Just me?”

Amanda is not alone -

Multiple friends chimed in with “Yes, me too!”, “All the time!”, “Absolutely!”, "🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️It’s what I call Mom ADD", and on and on and on…

You see Amanda is like you and I - she jumps in, is a hard worker, wants to get things done - but can become frustrated in the process.

bENCOURAGEd Amanda and all of us too - not because the work will go away or that frustration will never come - but bENCOURAGEd that “Little Bites Make You Feel Good!”

If any of us decide to clean the W H O L E house we will eventually become overwhelmed, but if we instead break the house up into PLATES - then those plates into PORTIONS - we can take "little bites" and feel better in the process.

Here are T W O examples of Plate Portions in a H O M E:

Kitchen Plate Portions:

  • loading the dishwasher

  • putting the dishes away

  • wiping down all the counters

  • organizing the supplies under the sink

  • sweeping the floor

  • mopping the mess

  • cleaning the microwave….

Bathroom Plate portions:

  • wiping the sinks

  • sparkling the mirrors

  • scrubbing the toilet

  • disinfecting the toilet

  • organizing the supplies under the sinks

  • straightening up the linen closet

  • shining the shower door

  • cleaning the shower tiles

  • mopping the linoleum…

When we breakdown the “big table” or in this case a big house into smaller portions then we can “eat” or clean our way to bENCOURAGEd - instead of feeling stuffed and frustrated.

We no longer have to devour the hour by shoveling everything into one B I G portion project, but we can take one portion project at a time - finishing it and feeling a sense of accomplishment!

But Amber, what if I do not get the whole kitchen cleaned or the bathroom picked up?

That is okay, because it is far better to finish what you start in little portions than it is to look around and have a mess feeling like you did not accomplish anything!

Plus, I can promise you this - that it will be easier to recruit others to help you if you are handing them little portion projects that they can complete so that they can feel good about finishing their work too!
